Whenever a tragedy descends on my life or family or community, I try not to grieve, but to mitigate the damage, investigate the causes, and think of solutions that might prevent a reocurrence. The American people, especially those in powerful government positions, have a problem with the latter, which leads to a certain futility and exasperation. In the time that I have owned the City Cafe (now in Edgewood), two customers were shot and killed by police at point-blank range, and on Saturday, 11 of my close neighbors were shot and killed by a deranged killer with an assault rifle.

America has a serious problem with guns, and our society alienates and marginalizes too many people who eventually get their hands on them. The problem is twofold: guns and social alienation, two volatile ingredients that have repeatedly produced disaster. …
