Spice Blamed for Increase in Number of 'Probation' Deaths

A GROWING number of ex-prisoners are dying on probation - and campaigners say the street-drug Spice is one of the reasons why.

There were 71 deaths of offenders on probation supervised by Cheshire and Greater Manchester Community Rehabilitation Companies in 2017/18.

This was up from just 42 deaths of people supervised by the CRC in 2016/17, and was the highest number in a year since the system was overhauled and part-privatised, with probation trusts replaced by the companies and the National Probation Service (NPS), four-and-ahalf years ago.

Of the 71 deaths which occurred under the supervision of Cheshire and Greater Manchester CRC, 36 were from natural causes, 15 were self inflicted and seven were accidental. There were also three murders, six 'unclassified' and four 'other. …
