Facebook Blocks 115 Accounts Ahead of US Midterm Elections

Facebook blocks accounts linked to foreign entities

Facebook said it blocked 115 accounts for suspected "coordinated inauthentic behavior" linked to foreign groups attempting to interfere in Tuesday's midterm elections.

The social media company shut down 30 Facebook accounts and 85 Instagram accounts and is investigating them in more detail, it said in a blog post late Monday.

Facebook acted after being tipped off Sunday by U.S. law enforcement officials.

Weather a factor? Not likely - Rain was drenching much of the East Coast as voters headed to the polls Tuesday. But it's unclear whether that gave either political party an edge.

The adage that foul weather discourages Democratic turnout and, hence, helps Republicans doesn't have much evidence to back it up, according to several academic papers including a 2007 study published in The Journal of Politics. Rain reduces voter participation by less than 1 percent per inch, the study found. Thanks to early voting, more than 35 million Americans had already cast ballots this year, so weather wouldn't affect them at all.

Voter suppression fears cancel Border Patrol activities in Texas - U.S. Customs and Border Protection abruptly canceled a crowd control exercise it had planned near a Hispanic neighborhood in El Paso on Tuesday after critics raised concern that the presence of so many armed border agents could discourage voting.

The agency had planned to stage a "mobile field force demonstration" Tuesday at the Paso del Norte border crossing, in an area adjacent to a neighborhood known as Chihuahuita.

After lawmakers, activists and the American Civil Liberties Union questioned the decision to conduct the exercise on Election Day, Border Patrol agents said it had been postponed.

Homeland Security officials rejected claims that the exercises had any relation to the election.
