1620 Aboard the Mayflower, anchored off Massachusetts, 41 Pilgrims signed a compact calling for a "body politick."

1831 Former slave Nat Turner, who had led a violent insurrection, was executed in Jerusalem, Va.

1918 Fighting in World War I ended as the Allies and Germany signed an armistice in the Forest of Compiegne in France. A summary showed approximately 60,000 Allegheny County men had seen service in the war, 1,527 had died, and government war contracts executed in Pittsburgh totaled about $215 million.

1949 A 42-day strike, which halted production in steel mills in the nation, ended when U.S. Steel Corp. signed a contract with the CIO-United Steel Workers for a company-financed pension plan.

1990 Stormie Jones, who survived the world's first heart and liver transplant, which was performed in Pittsburgh, died at age 13. …
