UNITED have offered Ashley Young a new one-year contract as he approaches the final six months of his existing deal.

The 33-year-old has captained the Reds in the last six matches but is free to negotiate with rival clubs in the January transfer window once he enters the final six months of his current contract.

However, United have opened talks with the England international's representatives over improved terms to retain Young until 2020.

Young joined United from Aston Villa for £16m in 2011 and is into his eighth season with the club.

They signed right-back Diogo Dalot in a £19m deal from Porto in the summer and left-back Luke Shaw agreed a new five-year contract last month, but Jose Mourinho values Young's seniority in the dressing room. Young has enjoyed an Indian summer under the Portuguese and started five of England's seven World Cup matches. …
