GARETH Southgate says Fabian Delph has been handed the armband for England's game against the USA on Thursday night because of his 'outstanding' leadership qualities.

The Manchester City midfielder, who spent last season deputising for Benjamin Mendy at left-back, is set to captain the side for the first time when he makes his 17th appearance for the Three Lions. The 28-year-old has played just six times for the Blues this season, but England manager Southgate says Delph deserves to lead the side out at Wembley.

"Fabian is captaining his country for the first time and it's a huge moment for him," Southgate said.

"He's an outstanding player and an outstanding person and a huge leader in our group.

"You wouldn't give the England captaincy to someone who doesn't have these outstanding attributes. …
