HUGE structures that once played a vital role in supplying energy to homes are to be demolished National Grid is planning to dismantle three disused gasholders on Thomas Street in Stretford. The site was first developed in the 1850s by the Stretford Gas Company and expanded numerous times over the next 100 years.

The gasholders were built in 1902, 1931 and 1942. D

They would be filled with gas during times of low demand so they could feed into the local network of pipes at times of peak demand.

New technology now allows the gas to be stored inside the pipes.

National Grid is inviting people who live in and around Gorse Hill to come to an event to find out more about plans for the work. Hannah White, National Grid land regeneration manager, said: "The gasholders at Thomas Street have not been used for a long time and their removal will help unlock the site so it can be brought back into beneficial use. …
