A Journalist's Vindication the Unjust Case against a Reporter Is Dismissed in Turkey

Good news for the cause of press freedom: A Turkish court on Tuesday threw out the conviction of our former colleague Ayla Albayrak. The result makes partial amends for the injustice of Ms. Albayrak's prosecution, though not for the many other Turkish offenses against a free press.

Ms. Albayrak was convicted last year of spreading propaganda for an outlawed Kurdish terror group, the PKK. The supposed evidence was an eminently balanced Aug. 19, 2015, Journal news story about the fighting in a remote, Kurdish-majority Turkish city on the border with Syria and Iraq. Local officials may have used Ms. Albayrak's dispatch as an excuse to show they're supporting Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's campaigns against the PKK and foreign media.
