Manitoba NDP want more drug resources

WINNIPEG - Manitoba's Opposition New Democrats say if they were in power, they would set up a new government department -- along with a separate minister -- for drug addiction and mental health.

NDP Leader Wab Kinew also says he would set up a safe-consumption site in Winnipeg, a detox centre in Brandon and 50 new treatment beds to help battle the growing use of meth and other drugs.

Kinew laid out his promises in what he called an alternative to the Progressive Conservative government's throne speech, scheduled for Tuesday.

He says while the government has been cutting spending, he would invest in health care and other services.

Kinew also says a NDP government would try to persuade cellphone companies to cut prices, although he wouldn't specify how. …
