'Eyesore' Pub Bites the Dust

A DERELICT 19th century Manchester pub is to be knocked down to make way for dozens of flats.

The Cheshire Cheese on Oldham Road, Ancoats, has been empty for more than a decade and the agent for the developers said the site was an 'eyesore' for drivers on the ring road. It will be replaced by a sevenstorey building housing 38 flats after Manchester council's planning committee gave the project the thumbs-up.

The agent told councillors that the company behind the project - Cheshire Cheese Assets, which was set up by Prestwich-based developer Gita Frank - is 'committed' to developing a 'quality scheme.' It will see one and two-bedroom apartments on the site, as well as retail space at the bottom.

A report for councillors said there were other drinking spots nearby for locals, such as the Crown and Kettle. …
