Mizzou Falls to K-State in Paradise Jam Final

Article excerpt

Kansas State took command of a close game with a late spurt in the first half then ran away with an 82-67 victory over Missouri in Monday's championship game of the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands.

The Tigers (3-2) got 24 points from senior guard Jordan Geist but not enough from the rest of their lineup as the No. 12 Wildcats had four players finish in double figures. Once again, Mizzou center Jeremiah Tilmon endured foul trouble from the game's opening minutes and finished with only two points, four rebounds and four turnovers before fouling out with more than three minutes left. Freshman guard Xavier Pinson added a season-high 12 points, and sophomore guard Mark Smith added 11 points and four assists for the Tigers, who shot season-best percentages from the field (48.9) and 3-point range (57.1), but couldn't overcome 14 turnovers.

Kansas State (5-0), led by Dean Wade's 21 points, shot 55.6 percent. Guard Barry Brown Jr. added 19 points, while St. Louis' Xavier Sneed (Hazelwood Central) scored 13 and Kamau Stokes had 10.

"The one thing we said in our scouting report was we knew they're old and tough and physical," Missouri coach Cuonzo Martin said on his postgame radio interview, "but the one thing I said to our team, 'If they shoot the ball 50 percent from the field, shake their hands and call it a night.'"

"We grew as a team but just let one slip," he added. " But a great one to learn from."

It was the first matchup of two longtime conference peers since 2015. The Wildcats have now won five straight over Mizzou, going back to their days together in the Big 12.

Over the final 3:29 of the first half, K-State outscored MU 13-0, including consecutive Wade 3-pointers, and turned a tie game into a 40-27 halftime lead.

An 11-2 run got the Tigers within 13 in the second half, but the Wildcats would push the lead back to 20. …
