A CHAMPIONS LEAGUE rule change has come in this season that could affect how United and City do business in January.

It was announced earlier this year that players who move from one Champions League club to another during the winter transfer window will now be able to represent their new club in the competition.

Under previous rules, players were only allowed to represent one club in the tournament over the course of the season.

For example, Philippe Coutinho was ineligible to play in the Champions League for Barcelona during the second half of last season because he had already turned out for Liverpool in the group phase.

The last time United were affected by the rule was when they signed Juan Mata in January, 2014 after the Spaniard had represented Chelsea in the group phase.

There are no examples of City being adversely affected by the old law. …
