Police Say Driver Was Reckless in Fatal May Crash

A McKees Rocks woman was speeding and driving recklessly in May when she caused a three-vehicle crash on the 10th Street bypass that killed another driver, according to Pittsburgh police.

Desiree A. Nelson, 40, was charged Wednesday with involuntary manslaughter, homicide by vehicle and related counts in the death of Michael Markilinski, 61, of Crescent.

Ms. Nelson was driving 33 mph over the speed limit with three children in her SUV on May 12 when she tried to change lanes and clipped another driver's bumper, causing her to lose control of the SUV, which spun across the road into oncoming traffic.

The SUV went into the path of Mr. Markilinski, who was driving a Toyota Corolla in the oncoming lanes, and he could not stop in time to avoid hitting it.

The impact flipped the SUV over and did severe damage to the front of the Corolla, according to a criminal complaint. …
