Polish Order of Nuns Opens Its First U.S. Convent in Strip

Parishioners at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church are welcoming three newcomers, and church leaders hope they will appreciate pierogies as much as they do.

The Strip District church will be the new home for three members of the Sisters of Merciful Jesus, an order based in Poland that chose Pittsburgh for its first U.S. convent. The sisters arrived this week from their previous residence in Canada to start their new work with Pittsburgh's poor, homeless and "most vulnerable."

The Rev. Christopher Donley, administrator of the newly combined parishes of St. Patrick-St. Stanislaus Kostka, St. Mary of Mercy, St. Benedict the Moor and Epiphany, will lead a welcome Mass in the sisters' honor at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Stanislaus.

"For me, the most important thing is their presence," Father Donley said Friday. …
