Article excerpt

EAST RUTHERFORD – St. Joseph should once again rise above Bergen Catholic and become the top-ranked football team in New Jersey.

The Green Knights, No. 2 in the USA TODAY Network New Jersey Top 20, defeated No. 1 Bergen Catholic, 13-0, in the Non-Public Group 4 final on Saturday night at rainy MetLife Stadium.

St. Joseph's defense was superb and Bergen Catholic had not been shut out in more than 30 years.

"The emotion going through me, it's indescribable," said Green Knights senior defensive back Connor Grieco, who had an interception. "I've never felt this way my entire life."

Green Knights senior Angelo Guglielmello became New Jersey's all-time leader in kicking points with 253 after booting two field goals and an extra point to help provide a 13-0 halftime lead.

Guglielmello, known as "The Shoe," surpassed the 249 points produced by another Bergen County standout, Ramapo graduate Ricky Krautman.

St. Joseph (10-2) extended its lead to 13-0, with Guglielmello capping a 13-play, 62-yard drive with a 19-yard field goal at 2:12 of the second quarter.

Guglielmello set the record with his 250th point at 3:52 of the first quarter by kicking an extra point to extend the lead to 10-0, after sophomore running back Audric Estime scored on a 3-yard run.

Guglielmello had given the Green Knights a 3-0 lead on their first possession by converting a 35-yard field goal to tie the all-time kicking points record.

During the regular season, St. Joseph succeeded Bergen Catholic (10-2) at No. 1. Bergen Catholic fell from the top spot in September after losing at St. Peter's Prep. The Crusaders then later returned to No. 1 on the strength of last month's 24-20 win at St. Joseph.

The final USA TODAY Network New Jersey Top 20 will be released in December, after next weekend's title games at MetLife Stadium, and St. Joseph is expected to be voted No. …
