Museum Slides in 'Ice' Rink for Party

The Carnegie Museum of Art will be transformed into a wintry mix of adult activities for Friday night's CMOA on Ice Winter Party. The museum sold out last year, the first time it had a synthetic skating rink and fake snow.

"We were brainstorming ways we could do something crazy for the holidays," said Laura McDermit, the museum's manager of social experiences. "The idea sort of bloomed around having an ice rink inside."

This year's rink will be bigger than last year's to accommodate more people. The rink is synthetic, a kind of plastic. But users use real ice skates on it.

"It's not water. It's not going to make a mess," said Ms. McDermit.

"It feels as similar as it can to skating on real ice without being real ice," she said. …
