JOSE Mourinho expects David de Gea to agree a new United contract.

The Reds have triggered their one-year option in the keeper's contract to extend his deal until the summer of 2020 as they continue to negotiate improved terms with the Spaniard on a longer deal.

The 28-year-old made a crucial save in Tuesday night's Champions League win over Young Boys and Mourinho aired his optimism about De Gea's Old Trafford future.

Ahead of today's trip to Southampton, Mourinho said: "I think David's performance [against Young Boys] you have to say for 92 minutes, to be David there or myself would be the same," Mourinho said, indicating the keeper had little to do for most of the game.

"I can kick as well as him and he had zero saves, zero shots - so either David or myself would be the same outcome. …
