Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde says upcoming legislation to enshrine child welfare rights for Indigenous children is a step forward to fixing a broken system that has broken First Nations families and communities for decades. The federal government is working on a new law in collaboration with Indigenous leaders to ensure the legal authority for Indigenous communities to make decisions about child welfare in their communities and reduce the high numbers of Indigenous children that are placed in foster care.
