RIO Ferdinand has suggested footballers should launch an NFL-style protest after Raheem Sterling was apparently racially abused by Chelsea fans.

The former United star took to social media sites following the incident, calling for football players to take action against racist behaviour in football. He posted on Instagram: 'Are we going to continue to allow this type of racist behaviour go on? All for kicking a ball'? Wycombe Wanderers striker Adebayo Akinfenwa commented: 'We have to put a stop to this someway'.

Ferdinand responded: 'In the NFL players took to the knee'.

The pundit appears to be suggesting British players should launch a similar protest to American football players, which saw a number of black footballers kneel during the national anthem in a protest against racism. …
