ST. LOUIS - A doctor from Warren County was sentenced Tuesday in federal court to 40 months in prison for prescribing powerful opiates to women with whom he had inappropriate relationships and ordered to repay $312,377 to Medicare and Medicaid, the U.S. Attorney's office said.

Dr. Philip D. Dean, 63, of Warrenton, pleaded guilty to two felonies in August, illegally distributing opiate medications and making a false statement to the Medicare program. Dean prescribed the powerful painkillers oxycodone, hydrocodone and fentanyl to three women with whom he had lived at various times, prosecutors said. By doing so, he exposed them to a serious risk of injury due to the strength of the drugs and the women's history of drug problems, prosecutors said.
