Forbath, Mccrane Take Aim at Boswell's Job

Article excerpt

The Steelers finished practice at 3 p.m. Wednesday, and kicker Chris Boswell exited the field with the rest of his teammates to the locker room.

Shortly thereafter, free-agent kickers Kai Forbath and Matt McCrane were warming up for a competition to see if they could unseat Boswell, who missed two more field goals in the 24-21 loss Sunday against the Oakland Raiders and watched his season percentage fall to 62.5.

Boswell, who signed a $16.8 million contract in August, said he is not surprised his job is up for grabs.

"That's the nature of this business," Boswell said. "We're judged on stats and wins and losses. If you don't do your job, they look elsewhere. It's just the nature of the business, the world we live in."

Boswell entered the season with an 89.5 career percentage and made a career-best 92.1 percent of his attempts last season. In 13 games this season, he has made just 10 of his 16 attempts and has missed five extra points.

In his first three seasons with the Steelers, Boswell missed just three extra points. His accuracy from 40 to 49 yards has been his biggest issue this season. He is 3 for 8 from that distance, including the 40-yard attempt as time expired against the Raiders.

Boswell said he has identified his issues and is trying to work through them.

"It's an ongoing thing," he said. "Obviously, it's not an easy fix or it would have been fixed already. It's just something you have to come to work every day and have the right attitude for it.

"It's mechanical. It's mental. It's a mixture of everything. You just have to figure it out as you go and find something that works for you. Something that works for me won't be something that works for someone else. It's just figuring myself out and coming back from this."

The Steelers likely will make a decision by Thursday. They have an important game against the New England Patriots Sunday afternoon that will go a long way toward determining if they make the playoffs this season. …
