Cor Jesu's Mather Gets a Workout on the Way to Four Golds in Lindbergh Invitational

SAPPINGTON - Maddie Mather needed a moment to compose herself.

And to take a few deep breaths.

The Cor Jesu senior swimmer was running on fumes Saturday following an impressive four-win performance at the Lindbergh Flyer Invitational.

"I'm really tired," Mather said after guzzling down a second bottle of water.

Mather's triathlete-type effort helped the Chargers to a third-place finish in the power-packed 13-team event.

Park Hill South, of suburban Kansas City, used its depth roll to the title with 467.5 points. Webster Groves was second (342) followed by Cor Jesu (315.5), Lindbergh (279) and Parkway South (272).

Mather and senior teammate Karisa Franz grabbed four golds apiece.

But Mather's effort was particularly impressive given the time frame of her races. Three of her wins came over the final five events. She swam 700 winning yards in a span of just 49 minutes.

The marathon began with an impressive win in the 500-yard freestyle event, the eighth race on the 12-race card. Mather completed the longest event of the day in 5 minutes, 14.80 seconds. She bolted right to the lead and never looked back, finishing 13 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.

Less than 30 minutes later, Mather captured the breaststroke in a state meet qualifying time of 1:08.25.

Mather had about 10 minutes to chill before helping the Chargers' 400 free relay team to the title. She swam the third leg and stretched her team's lead from eight to 11 seconds during her appearance.

"It's impressive watching her go from one race to another so quickly," Franz said. "It definitely takes a lot of guts -- and she has it."

Mather, who will continue her career at the University of Nebraska Omaha, is hoping to improve on last year's third-place finish at state in the 500, her signature event. She said Saturday's early-season outing is a huge step in that direction.

"This is one of the best days that I can remember," Mather said. …
