THOUSANDS of revellers are expected to welcome in 2019 with a huge fireworks display in the city centre.

The countdown to the new year will start at 11pm on New Year's Eve in Albert Square - and will be family-friendly and alcohol-free.

Every year, thousands of people brave the winter cold to bring in the new year in style, with 2018's event led by Hits Radio, and hosted by DJ Wes Butters.

The event will be held in the shadow of Manchester town hall and a big screen will carry the allimportant countdown to midnight - with the fireworks released from the roof of the iconic building at midnight.

Coun Pat Karney, the council's city centre spokesperson, said: "Our New Year's Eve event is growing every year, so now you can join the global countdown with the likes of Sydney and New York right here in Manchester. …
