1777 During the American Revolutionary War, Gen. George Washington led his army of about 11,000 men to Valley Forge, Pa., to camp for the winter.

1891 The first telephone line between Pittsburgh and New York City went into operation.

1938 Pittsburgh Mayor Cornelius Scully broke ground for the $3 million Bedford Dwellings, a low-cost housing community for 420 families.
