The school board on Dec. 12 approved a five-year contract with the Steel Valley Education Association.

Board president Jim Bulger said the current contract does not expire until the last day of school in June, so the new contract will run from the 2019-2020 to 2023-2024 school years.

"The fact that we got the contract done within the early-bird period, well before [the current contract] expires, speaks volumes to the way the two sides were able to work together," he said.

Many teacher contracts include both a wage increase and separate step increases related to how many years a teacher has been working.

Mr. Bulger said the new contract is unusual in that increased pay will be in the form of step increases in steps one through 18, the highest step. The current contract had both wage and step increases, he said. …
