Be careful when deciding what parts of your Christmas mess ends up in the recycling bin -- recycling processors see an increase in unacceptable items during and after the holidays.

Festive leftovers that can't be recycled include bubble wrap, holiday string lights, ribbons, strings, bows, garland and plastic foam packaging, according to the local recycling task force OneSTL.

As always, old electronics and plastic bags have no place in your bins -- they jam sorting equipment, putting workers at risk and shutting down operations for hours, the group said.

Household waste increases about 25 percent during the holiday season, making recycling more important than at any other time of the year, but recent concern about high contamination rates in recycling means people should make sure they're putting out only items that can be recycled. …
