Extra Christmas Work Fails to Pay off for Guardiola

CITY players were called into training on Christmas Eve after Pep Guardiola saw something that needed work in the Crystal Palace defeat.

The Premier League champions were scheduled to have the day off but a shock home defeat to Roy Hodgson's side on December 22 meant that an extra session was put on to try and correct their mistakes.

Guardiola, though, said the training was not punishment for the players but because they just needed to tweak their game.

"We trained one day more because we needed to practise something we didn't do properly, but I am not a guy for bad moments. It is when I am closer.

"Last season, I was more serious with my players because when you win the tendency is to relax. In [this] situation, they need support and they need to be together."

The extra work did not bear fruit on Boxing Day as City succumbed to a second straight league defeat to leave themselves in third place, seven points short of Liverpool at the halfway mark. …
