NAT043 - (YEAR-Glacier-Receding) VANCOUVER. x-16s. Scientists say a good portion of Western Canada's mountain glaciers will soon be just a memory. Simon Fraser University ecology professor David Hik says the region is a Canadian hot spot for warming, and the magnitude of change in those glaciers is dramatic. ("..Rocky Mountains.") TAG: Peyto Glacier in Banff National Park has lost about 70 per cent of its mass in the last half century. Such rapidly melting glaciers create a domino effect, with higher sea levels, and dry areas and dust bowls where the ice is no longer melting. Hik says this dust can also cause problems for vegetation by settling on trees and plants, reducing photosynthesis.
