Steelers Need More Control for More Wins

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin likes to say he focuses on what he can control. I always thought that coaches control a lot with a football team: physical and mental preparation, gameplan and adjustments in game, clock management, disciplined culture and more. The following problems showed up this year and should be addressable by the coach.

Penalties: The Steelers are in the top five most-penalized teams in the league.

Losing games when they lead at half time: Other teams are making adjustments and Mr. Tomlin and his staff either decide not to make adjustments or are not able to make adjustments to counter.

Time management: Terrible clock management in terms of when to take time outs.

Challenge flag:Horrible in making decisions on when to and when not to challenge.

Blown assignments: Defense has especially had a huge problem with blown coverages this year.

Missed tackles:They were especially a problem early in the year.

Extremely slow start to season: It's as if the first four games were the preseason, because very few starters played at all in actual preseason; the winning streak started after game four. …
