Man Murdered in St. Louis as He Tried to Defend 2 Teenage Girls, Charges Say

ST. LOUIS - A St. Louis man has been charged with murder in connection with a fatal shooting Sunday that police say started as an argument and escalated to gunfire.

Christopher Rainey, 42, of the 2600 block of Chippewa Street, was charged Tuesday with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. He is accused of killing Vincent Martin Sanders, 35, of St. Louis, about 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the 2600 block of Chippewa in southwest St. Louis.

Police say the confrontation started when Rainey got into an argument with two teenage girls outside the nearby Moto Mart on Jefferson Avenue, according to court documents. Sanders came to defend the girls and eventually punched Rainey, the documents state.

Police say Rainey then took out a handgun and fired two shots. Sanders backed away, and Rainey pursued, shooting Sanders once in the chest, according to charging documents. …
