(Cabinet-Retreat)

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is hosting his first cabinet retreat since he conducted a small shuffle of his inner circle earlier this week.

As Finance Minister Bill Morneau arrived in Sherbrooke, Quebec for the start of the three-day meeting, he said global disruptions related to the Brexit chaos in Britain, our diplomatic dispute with Saudi Arabia, and diplomatic and trade tensions with China and the U-S are not dampening his optimism about Canada's economy.

Morneau said Canada, which has a free trade deal with the E-U, will work to continue a "very strong trading relationship'' with the U-K when -- or if -- it exits the European Union. (2)

Canada and China are going back and forth over how many countries support the Trudeau government's call to denounce the detentions and criminal sentences in China.

Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland listed a number of allies Canada has called upon to speak out against what she calls the "inhumane" death sentence ordered for B-C's Robert Schellenberg this week, and the U-S denounced the punishment for his drug-smuggling conviction as "politically motivated."

Freeland also touted allies are voicing their support for Ottawa's effort to secure the freedom of detainees Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor.

A Chinese government spokeswoman brushed aside Canada's intervention request for clemency, saying the courts exercise their powers in accordance to the country's laws, free from interference. (2)

A prestigious private school in Toronto rocked by allegations of sexual assault by students has reinstated its varsity basketball team for this current school year.

St. Michael's College School, a Catholic institution for boys, says it has completed an internal investigation that cleared the remaining members of the basketball team of any wrongdoing -- just as an earlier probe by police had done. …
