1848 James W. Marshall discovered a gold nugget at Sutter's Mill in northern California, a discovery that led to the gold rush of 1849.

1871 The retail division of Joseph Horne Co. moved into Library Hall on Penn Avenue in Downtown Pittsburgh, a building that previously had housed Mercy Hospital.
