Federal Workers Can Text to Learn about Aid

The United Way of Pennsylvania and two labor groups are launching a text initiative to assist federal workers and contractors affected by the ongoing partial government shutdown.

Starting Friday, they can text FEDSD to the number 898-211 to connect them with resources to assist them.

Friday marks the second payless payday for federal workers as the shutdown drags on.

The 2-1-1 number is a social services hotline run by United Way. Anyone can call for information about a variety of services; many calls deal with basic needs such as food, housing and utility assistance. The service is also available locally via text message and online chat.

"The federal workers and contracted employees hit by this partial federal government shutdown are working class people with families to support. Unions and community service organizations are coming together to ensure that they are not alone in this crisis," said Pennsylvania AFL-CIO secretary-treasurer Frank Snyder in a statement announcing the initiative by the United Way of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO, and the American Federation of Government Employees District 3. …
