1964 FEBRUARY 4: It's a far cry from the early projectors of the silent era to these massive machines in Manchester's Gaumont cinema!

Only the latest technology was good enough for the year's biggest movies, including Zulu, the Beatles' film A Hard Day's Night and the Walt Disney classic Mary Poppins.

The Gaumont opened in October 1935 with the British classic The Thirty-Nine Steps starring Withington-born actor Robert Donat.

The popular Oxford Road cinema, which had a capacity of 2,300 in its heyday, closed in 1974.
