I am a lifelong surfer, swimmer, fisherman, kayaker and all-around outdoor enthusiast who has vacationed on Cape Cod since I was in my mother's belly.

As someone who has spent a significant amount of time on the same beach where Arthur Medici was tragically killed last week, I share the editorial board's desire to enact more protections for people in the waters off New England.

What I would like to hear from the board are concrete ideas about increased funding or new security measures for protecting beachgoers. Instead, in the Sept. 22 editorial, "Sharks in Charge: The law must protect human safety," the board spends more verbiage opining about the exaggerated effects of conservation.

This hyperbole is incredibly ironic in light of the many conservation efforts, including President Kennedy's 1961 bill establishing the Cape Cod National Seashore, that have had a remarkable impact on preserving the unique and bountiful ecosystem of the cape and its waters. …
