Less than two months after it debuted in theaters, this Fred Rogers documentary became the top-grossing feature film biography documentary of all time, taking in $22 million. It's also among the Top 12 most popular overall feature documentaries of all time, according to Deadline.com.

Fred Rogers has been a local hero for decades so it's no surprise this story of the gentle man and defender of childhood would connect with viewers seeking joy in a contentious time fraught with bad news at every turn.

Kudos to HBO and PBS for sharing the TV premiere -it always seemed like the film was destined to air on PBS because PBS's "Independent Lens" was a producer on the movie -and making this doc available for all audiences. …
