DON'T be fooled into thinking that just because these dramas are not on at primetime that they are in any way inferior.

Returning for a 10th series, these daily, standalone stories, originally created by the master of the pen Jimmy McGovern, are always gripping and well made.

They generally follow a character who reaches a turning point in their lives.

In this first episode, Carl (Ben Tavassoli) is a cleaner at a university.

We're told he's a bright guy, but has never really applied himself. His boss Pauline (Shobna Gulati) reckons he could go far if he tried a bit harder, but the job is hardly inspiring.

While sweeping the floor outside a seminar room, Carl unknowingly throws a sign in the bin. It says: "Study group cancelled."

One quick case of mistaken identity later and before he knows it, Carl is playing along and pretending to be Leo Carlton, English lecturer. …
