FORMER United defender Paul Parker believes that legendary goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar would be the perfect candidate for a new sporting director role at Old Trafford.

It is understood United are looking to restructure the football side of the club, with the hope being a new director of football is hired before the next manager is chosen in the summer. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has exceeded all expectations in the caretaker manager role, winning nine out of his first ten matches in charge, and now there are calls for him to get the job permanently.

As a result, Parker thinks that Solskjaer and Van der Sar would make a great partnership in running the club.

He wrote in his Eurosport column: "I really think the sporting director model can work for United. Fergie is obviously there for advice whenever Ole needs it, but a sporting director would be a big help for a young coach moving forward. …
