After Battle Goes to Court, Company Gets OK to Build Car Wash in Rock Hill

ROCK HILL - The battle over a car wash on Manchester Road went all the way to court, where the company behind the project won, city officials said Tuesday.

At the request of city staff, the bill for a special use permit needed for the car wash was approved at Tuesday's Board of Aldermen meeting. The vote in favor was unanimous.

After the meeting, City Administrator Jennifer Yackley said she assumed Wallis Cos. would apply for permits soon and begin construction of the car wash at 9720 Manchester in the spring.

The vote brought to an end an almost yearlong bid by Wallis to get approval for the car wash.

Last May, Wallis withdrew its request for a zoning change that would have allowed it to raze the Leach's BP station and construct the car wash.

The withdrawal came after many nearby residents protested to city officials that noise and lights from the car wash would destroy the serenity of their neighborhood. …
