Landslide Forces Evacuation of 3 Allentown Homes

A sliding hillside in Pittsburgh's Allentown neighborhood forced city officials to evacuate three homes late Wednesday, two of them on the 900 block of busy Arlington Avenue.

The third house is farther up the slope, toward McLain and Emerald streets, said Guy Costa, the city's chief operations officer. City officials are monitoring the hill to see if Arlington should close to traffic.

"You don't want anyone in these homes while this hillside is moving," Mr. Costa said Thursday morning. "Once it becomes safe - if it becomes safe - then folks can go back into the houses."

Mud and debris have been tumbling down the slope, a situation that's likely to worsen with Thursday's rainfall, Mr. Costa said.

Much of the material is landing on the evacuated properties on Arlington, where "some of the mud is working its way into one home," he said. …
