MANCHESTER city centre's only fire station could be sold off for housing as plans for 15,000 new homes in the area move closer to reality.

Thompson Street's station and training centre, near Angel Meadow, may be redeveloped as the town hall pushes ahead with its 'Northern Gateway' vision for the area running north along Rochdale Road.

The valuable site sits on the edge of that regeneration corridor, which the town hall and its development partner Far East Consortium have earmarked for thousands of new homes over the next two decades.

Its sale would also generate a substantial sum for the fire service, which needs to save £13.5m under mayoral plans due to be officially announced in the coming weeks.

An update on the Northern Gateway going before Manchester council chiefs this week suggests that Greater Manchester combined authority is eager to get the best price possible for the land, arguing that it should be earmarked for new housing in the town hall's blueprint rather than as a fire station. …
