MONTREAL - Dozens of Quebec tourists who got trapped in Haiti amid violent street protests were met with hugs and tears from relieved loved ones after they landed at Montreal's Pierre Elliott Trudeau airport last night.

An Air Transat flight carrying 150 passengers, including 113 Quebec tourists who booked the same vacation package through the airline, landed just after 9 p.m.

Helicopter evacuations began early Saturday morning to take the travellers from their resort to the airport in Port-au-Prince.

Air Transat says the Quebec and Canadian governments helped co-ordinate the evacuation effort.

One Haitian Quebecer, who gave his name as Pierre, wasn't among the vacationers at the resort and says he had to brave the dangerous streets of Port-au-Prince to get to the airport by motorcycle. …
