FROM TODAY UNTIL SUNDAY, JUNE 2 Visual arts / Lucy Burscough: Facing Out In a startling report, published last year, it was revealed that 80% of people with facial disfigurements had been abused or harassed in the street. The survey, conducted by the charity Changing Faces, also found that half of those with a disfigurement felt vulnerable while on public transport.

It's an alarming statistic - and one that will surely linger at the forefront of your mind while you explore Lucy Burscough's powerful new exhibition, Facing Out, which opens at the Whitworth this weekend.

The culmination of a two-year project, Facing Out will explore the experiences of those receiving treatment for facial cancer and its aftermath. Working with patients at Maggie's Cancer Support Centre at the Christie Hospital, Manchesterbased Lucy Burscough has produced a series of paintings which invite a more nuanced dialogue surrounding those with facial disfigurements. …
