1901 United States Steel Corp. was incorporated by J.P. Morgan.

1935 The United Engineering & Foundry Company of Pittsburgh received a $3 million order for the Zaporoptal Steel Works in Soviet Russia - one of the largest contracts ever placed in the United States for foreign shipment.

1977 George E. Lee, whose massage parlor operations were under investigation, was shot dead in a parking lot on Seventh Street.

1992 J. Dennis O'Connor was installed as chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh.
