Jagmeet Singh tightened his shaky grip on the reins of the New Democrat Party last night by winning an important byelection in the Vancouver area.

The federal N-D-P leader captured Burnaby South with over 38 per cent of the vote.

Had he lost, Singh would almost certainly have faced demands to resign as leader.

But the challenge he now faces ahead of this fall's national election was underscored by the N-D-P's simultaneous loss to the Liberals in Montreal. (2)

Lawyer Rachel Bendayan reclaimed Montreal's Outremont riding for the Trudeau Liberals.

Her win came even as the governing party struggles with the fallout from allegations that the Prime Minister's Office pressured ex-attorney general Jody Wilson-Raybould to halt criminal proceedings against Montreal-based engineering giant S-N-C-Lavalin.

And the Conservatives kept the grip its held on the southern Ontario riding of York-Simcoe since 2004, with Conservative Scot Davidson capturing 53 per cent of the vote over Liberal rival Shaun Tanaka's 30. (2)

It took about seven hours to clear a mangled mess of vehicles caught up in a massive pileup on a busy southern Ontario highway.

Damaging winds, blowing snow and whiteout conditions led to chaos yesterday on Highway 400, between Toronto and Barrie.

A 10 a-m crash in the southbound lanes involved over 70 vehicles, including transport trucks, a fuel tanker and a limousine.

Only minor injuries were reported.

Police in eastern Ontario said an 18-vehicle collision in Champlain Township sent seven people to hospital, while there were no serious injuries in a 20-car pileup on Highway 11 near Orillia or in a 14-car crash on Highway 115 near Peterborough. (2)
