ONE of the tasks Pep Guardiola faced when he walked through the door at City was how to reinvigorate an ageing squad.

The Blues had older legs than most of the teams they faced domestically and in Europe under Manuel Pellegrini, and it was seen as a problem. A string of teenagers were signed up last summer and it had the desired effect: no Premier League team gave more minutes to Under-21 players this season than City.

Raheem Sterling led the way with 2,515 minutes while summer buys John Stones (2,013), Leroy Sane (1,787) and Gabriel Jesus (651) contributed considerably; Kelechi Iheanacho (525) and Aleix Garcia (76) completed the total.

Guardiola declared Jesus, Sterling and Sane as 'the future for Manchester City' earlier in the campaign and - with a number of senior players moving on this summer - next season should see even more minutes for younger players. …
