Benefits Claimants 'Now Owe More Rent'

UNIVERSAL Credit (UC) claimants living in homes from Manchester's five main social housing providers owe an average of £786 in rent arrears, a new report has revealed.

Those on the new benefit have described it as 'complicated, difficult and demeaning' and claimants owe more than tenants under the old Housing Benefit system, the town hall study said. And UC recipients owe nearly £300 more than registered provider tenants overall.

"One of the current key areas of concern highlighted by the report is the disparity shown in the figures between the levels of arrears for tenants on UC, which are much higher than tenants on [housing benefit]," the report said.

The report, which looks into the impact of welfare reform and UC on Manchester's economy, is going before the council's economy scrutiny committee today. …
