WHEN: Commercial cruise lines generally offer trips around South America during the summer months south of the equator, roughly November through March.

HOLIDAY CLOSURES: Take note of the dates your ship is scheduled at various destinations; during visits to Punta Arenas, Chile, on Dec. 25, and Montevideo, Uruguay, on Jan. 1, most shops, restaurants and museums were closed.

WHERE: Cruises originate domestically in Florida (Miami, Fort Lauderdale) and sometimes from Los Angeles (although Princess doesn't currently have a future repositioning cruise leaving from L.A. scheduled). Or you can travel from one side of South America to the other, often from Buenos Aires, Argentina, to near Santiago, Chile, or vice versa.

WHAT TO WEAR: Because it is summer in the Southern Hemisphere, a tropical wardrobe is warranted for portions of the cruise that begin and end nearer the equator while winter garb is necessary for locations nearest to Antarctica, which is even on some South American cruise itineraries for the 2019-20 season. …
