It's budget day in Manitoba, and some are watching to see whether there will be a long-promised tax cut that would lead to an early provincial election.

The Progressive Conservative government promised in the last election to cut the provincial sales tax to seven per cent from eight per cent before the end of its first term.

The next election is slated for October 6th, 2020, but Premier Brian Pallister has not ruled out calling an earlier vote.

Manitoba's only federal cabinet minister, Jim Carr, says he has total confidence in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the S-N-C Lavalin affair continues to unfold.

Carr, who is minister of international trade diversification, has stayed loyal to Trudeau after Jane Philpott and Jody Wilson-Raybould quit cabinet over the prime minister's handling of the file.

He disagrees with Philpott's concerns that there are solemn principles at stake due to political pressure on the former attorney general.

Carr says Trudeau has consistently said that Wilson-Raybould was given the ultimate decision over whether to intervene in the case when she was justice minister. (Wpg FP)



Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale is sticking up for his boss over the S-N-C Lavalin affair.

Speaking in Regina yesterday, Goodale says he sides with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau following the resignations of Jane Philpott and Jody Wilson-Raybould from the Liberal cabinet.

Goodale says the federal government will work to earn the trust of Canadians.

And he says that will include making sure that proper processes are followed and all questions are answered about S-N-C Lavalin. (CKRM)
