OFFICIALS URGE SAFETY FOR ST. PATRICK'S DAY REVELERS

Downtown will transform into a celebration of the Irish on Saturday for the annual St. Patrick's Day parade, and Pittsburgh safety officials are asking the public to remain vigilant and safe.

Several streets along the parade route, including Liberty Avenue, Grant Street, the Boulevard of the Allies and Stanwix Street, will close from 7:30 a.m. to about 1 p.m. The parade will form on Liberty Avenue from 11th to 26th streets.

The Department of Public Safety is warning attendees not to carry open containers of alcohol in Market Square for the "family friendly" event scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Police will be out "in full force" looking for underage drinking, city officials said.

"Please remember there will be zero tolerance for disruptive and illegal behavior," city public safety director Wendell Hissrich said in a news release. …
